Abu Quhafa was the son of 'Amir ibn 'Amr ibn Kaab ibn Saad ibn Taym ibn Murra ibn Kaab ibn Luayy ibn Ghalib ibn Fihr〔Muhammad ibn Ishaq. ''Sirat Rasul Allah''. Translated by Guillaume, A. (1955). Oxford: Oxford University Press.〕 and he lived in Mecca.〔 He married his cousin Salma bint Sakhar ibn Amr ibn Kaab, who was known as ''Umm Al-Khayr'' ("Mother of Goodness").〔 They had several sons who did not survive infancy. When Abu Bakr was born in 573,〔 he was therefore known as ''Atiq'' ("exempted" from death), while his subsequent brothers were given the related names ''Muataq'' and ''Muaytaq''.〔 Abu Quhafa later married a younger woman, Hind bint Nuqayd.
